Brunsvigia josephinae

This is sort of like a Naked Lady on steroids, so to speak. The boot in the picture is size 11... this is a large bulb. Like many but by no means all Amaryllids it is normally partially exposed from the ground. We see it here at the end of the summer, around September in the northern hemisphere (reversed of course in its native habitat). The large flower spike is just beginning to emerge from the leafless bulb, which has been dormant all through the heat and drought of summer.
