Calochortus habitat in the White Mountains of California
One of the most wide-spread (and beautiful) of the Mariposa Lilies is
Calochortus kennedyi. If you were driving over the White Mountains
toward Nevada, you might find yourself in a high desert valley like this
one. In May and June, if there had been enough rain, there might be some
scattered orange dots in the landscape. In this population, the plants
avoid both the highest points and the valley floor, so they tend to make a
sort of 'bathtub ring' around the lower slopes of the valley at a certain
altitude.
